Assistant Farmer Position

Everdale is seeking to hire an assistant farmer wishing to gain experience in organic farm management and to improve their farming skills and knowledge.  The contact begins on April 9, 2012 and runs until Dec 31, 2012, with the possibility that the position becomes permanent.

The assistant farmer will be trained and supervised by Everdale’s Farm Manager and Field Coordinator. Job roles include field and bed preparation, direct seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, post-harvest handling, as well as the marketing and selling of produce.

Everdale farm is a certified organic operation that includes 10-acres of mixed vegetables, direct-to-consumer sales through farmers markets inTorontoand a 350-member CSA (including both on-farm pick-ups and a drop-off inToronto). We manage about 140 acres of hay, 30 acres of pasture, and 25 acres of mixed grain. The farm also includes smaller projects such as mixed livestock, seed saving, cut flowers, and bio-intensive gardens.

Everdale is a registered non-profit educational farm and learning centre.  That means that Everdale is not owned by a person or shareholders, it is “owned by an idea”.  The idea is:

To be a teaching farm that provides hands-on, solution-based food and farming education to build and engage healthy local communities.

We are looking for candidates who are inspired by Everdale’s mission and who are excited at the prospect of being actively engaged in our work.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • a minimum of one season of experience growing organic vegetables on a medium-scale farm with direct-to-consumer sales
  • a commitment to Everdale’s educational work and our mission statement
  • strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • a valid driver’s licence

Monthly salary dependent on experience.  On-farm room and board is available for only $17 per day. This includes a private bedroom, shared kitchen and living space, (mostly) organic ingredients for meal preparation, long distance phone, and high speed internet.

Applicants should send a letter of interest, resume, and 3 references to carl@everdale.org by 5pm on Sunday January 22, 2012. We will respond by email to indicate that we have received your application.

Thank you to all applicants. Only applicants selected for an interview will be subsequently contacted.
