Important Tax Info
Don’t sell those shares. Give them to Everdale and save on your taxes!
Did you know that the capital gains tax on securities (stocks, bonds and mutual funds) donated to registered charities (such as Everdale) was eliminated in the federal budget of July 2006?
This provision affords Canadians another reason to give generously to their favorite charities. The total market value of securities held by Canadians is an astounding $1.3 trillion. Unrealized capital gains account for almost half of these holdings. That represents a huge tax bite that can be avoided if individuals give a security (or any portion they wish) to a charity instead of cash.
Here is an example of the difference between donating $1000 cash and giving a security of the same value to Everdale.
Two Tax Savings: An Example
| Form of Donation | |||
| Cash | Security | ||
| Value of Donation | $1,000 | $1,000 | |
| Marginal Tax Rate | 43% | 43% | |
| Tax Credit for Donation (1) | $430 | $430 | |
| Original Investment | $400 | $400 | |
| Capital Gain (CG) | $600 | $600 | |
| Tax on CG if sold/donated | $129 | $0 | |
| Tax Saved by donating (2) | $129 | ||
| Total Tax Saving (1+2) | $430 | $559 | |
| Cost of Donating $1000 | $570 | $441 | |
Estates too
This tax break applies to estates as well as to individuals. If a person’s will directs the executors to donate an amount to a charity, that amount can be given in securities and not in cash, with the tax saving benefiting the estate.
How to donate securities
Contact your broker or financial advisor and tell him or her you wish to donate securities in any value you wish to Everdale Environmental Learning Centre, a registered charity (#861517126RR0001). Everdale has set up a securities account with Dundee Securities Corporation, account #46-0794-A, to receive your gift.
With your authorization, the security will be transferred to Everdale’s Dundee account. (Normally, that value will be based on the closing price, but if the security’s price varies widely during the day, the day’s average price can be used to calculate this value.) Any costs charged to us by Dundee Securities for this transaction will not be deducted from the value of your receipt. If you are charged a transaction cost by your broker, you can add that amount to the value of your donation for tax purposes.
Tip on minimizing your taxable capital gains
If you have two securities you wish to dispose of, donate the one that has made the greatest capital gain and sell the one that has gained less or has depreciated.
